SCRIPT WITH TRANSLATIONS AND EXPLANATIONS

Hello! It’s Tim here from domineingles.com.br. So, have you been watching the Olympic games these days? I’ve been posting news in English on our Facebook page and on our twitter page, too, so don’t forget to follow us there.  Yesterday I saw a report about the United States basketball team; and the sports commentator was talking about the teams that posed a threat to the United States team, and one of them is Brazil. And he said (in English, of course), “Precisamos ficar de olho no Brasil!” How would you say that in English; do you know?

  • have you been watching...? = você está assistindo...?
  • these days = esses dias
  • i've been posting = tenho postado
  • news = notícias
  • don't forget = não se esqueça
  • follow us = seguir-nos
  • report = reportagem
  • sports commentator = comentarista esportivo
  • was talking = estava falando
  • pose a threat = representar uma ameaça
  • one of them = um deles

Ok. Let’s watch this segment to see if you remembered.

- I would say that the dark horse to win the gold medal is Brazil. Everybody knows about Spain – the challenges they’re going to present to the US. But Brazil has size; Brazil has three NBA big men, who are as big as anybody on the US team; and then they have a great point guard; and if they´re able to hold onto the ball and avoid turnovers against the U.S. to slow the game down a little bit, that would be a real interesting matchup; and I would not be surprised if Brazil beat Spain and gets into the gold medal final against the US.
- We will certainly keep our eye on the Brazilians.

  • i would say that... = eu diria que...
  • dark horse = azarão, zebra (em uma competição)
  • win the gold medal = ganhar a medalha olímpica
  • everbody knows about spain = todos conhecem a espanha
  • the challenges they are going to present = os desafios que irão apresentar
  • size = tamanho
  • big men = homens grandes
  • who are as big as anybody on the US team = que são tão grandes como qualquer outro na equipe dos E.U.A
  • point guard = armador
  • if they're able to hold onto the ball = se conseguirem segurar a bola
  • avoid turnovers = evitar "roubadas de bola" - evitar perder a posse de bola para o adversário
  • to slow the game down = Para diminuir/desacelerar o ritmo do jogo
  • a little bit = um pouquinho
  • a real interesting matchup = um duelo bem interessante
  • i would not be surprised = não ficaria surpreso
  • if brazil beat spain = se o brazil derrotasse a espanha
  • gets into the gold medal final = entrasse no final para a disputa da medalha de ouro

Como se diz ‘ficar de olho em alguém' em inglês Como se diz “ficar de olho em alguém" em português? Qual é a tradução de "ficar de olho em alguém"?

    • ficar de olho em alguém = keep an eye on someone

Também pode-se usar essa expressão com pronomes possessivos (my, your, his, our, etc.).

Exemplos:

I need to keep an eye on him. (or) I need to keep my eye on him.
Precisamos ficar de olho nele.

We need to keep an eye on him.  (or) We need to keep our eye on him.
Precisamos ficar de olho nele.

So who am I cheering for in the London Olympics? Well, I always cheer for Brazil no matter what game their playing. But, at the same time, I cheer for the United States in the overall medal table; so I hope they get more medals this year than China. And I hope Brazil gets more medals than the last time, too. So don’t forget to follow us on facebook and on twitter; and then tomorrow I have a special tip on our site, too. Ok? Have a great day! Bye bye!

  • who am i cheering for = para quem estou torcendo
  • i cheer for brazil = torço pelo brasil
  • no matter what game = não importa qual jogo
  • at the same time = ao mesmo tempo
  • overall medal table = quadro geral de medalhas

this article is pretty fantastic, uau , how many interesting touchs it presents !!!!!!

Thanks, Luiz! So glad you liked it!

Oh, just a very good article! I’ve been rooting for our Men’s Volleyball once our National Soccer Team hasn’t been that good lately what let me down at times. Anyway, I do hope they can improve their soccer matches ’till 2014. And why? Brazil will be hosting the World Cup and everybody’s keeping an eye on us! A good reason to be worried about… LOL

That’s right, Fabio. The whole world will have their eye on Brasil. I hope they don’t disappoint!

Yeah, we should keep our eyes on chinese and american teams, and not at Brazil – isn’t! Although Brazil has gotten some medals… It’s better and better! I’m cheering for Brazil is of course… Brazil already was too feared, but today is a lot weak in all competitions… Hugs, Jackson

Today Brazil plays against Argentina. Come on, Brazil! Don’t let us down!!

I hope that’s not so, Gutemberg! Let’s see how Brazil does in the Olympics.

Really, really good! Very helpful indeed. Tks! 😉
