Meu Pai Nunca Me Desapontou

Meu Pai Nunca Me Desapontou

Father's Day is always celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the United States.

I have a student who is a Dr. Who’s fan.  Dr. Who is a British science fiction television program (spelled programme in British English 😉 )  produced by the BBC.  This student was telling me about an episode where a young lady goes back in time and meets her father. She has some nice words to say about her father (although they are not entirely true).

  • spelled = soletrado
  • goes back in time = volta no tempo
  • meets her father = encontra o seu pai
  • she has some nice words to say about her father= (literalmente "ela tem algumas palavras boas a dizer sobre o seu pai") ela tem elogios a dizer sobre o seu pai
  • although = apesar de que
  • not entirely true = não totalmente verdadeiras

Watch a part of the episode and fill in the blanks below.

  • fill in the blanks = preencha as lacunas

By the way, that goes to show that both the United States AND Great Britain use phrasal verbs!

  • that goes to show = isso mostra
  • both…and… = tanto…quanto…

Preencha as lacunas (depois veja o script com explicações abaixo).

  • together = juntos

- You still living with us?
- Yep.

  • yes, yeah, yep = sim (yeah e yep são formas informais de dizer "yes")

- You. . . You told me a bedtime story every night when I was small. You were always there, you never missed one. And… um… you took us for picnics in the country every Saturday. You never let us down. You were there for us all the time. Someone I could really rely on.

  • tell a bedtime story = contar uma história para a hora de dormir (um conto de ninar)
  • you never missed one = você não perdeu nenhum, nunca
  • you took us for picnics = você nos levava para fazer piqueniques
  • let someone down [phrasal verb] = ver http://www.domineingles.com.br/2009/02/a-palestra-foi-decepcionante-phrasal-verb/
