Veja esta tira da revistinha “Turma da Mônica” em inglês de junho de 2011.

Note que em inglês o Jimmy Five (Cebolinha) troca os “R”s pelos “W”s. Então o diálogo sem os erros de fala do Jimmy Five ficaria assim:

Jimmy Five: Ahhh!!! I’m the really scary river creature!!!

  • scary = assustador
  • river creature = monstro (criatura) do rio

Smudge: Jimmy Five! Knock it off! It’s kind of obvious that it’s you!

Jimmy Five: Rats! I knew my shoes would reveal my true form!

  • knock it off, phrasal verb informal = para com isso!
  • Rats! = Droga!

Jimmy Five: I knew my shoes would give me away!

  • give somebody away = “delatar”, “entregar” alguém (no sentido de “revelar um segredo sem querer”)

Veja outros exemplos:
They knew I wasn’t Brazilian! My blue eyes and my accent gave me away.
From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs:
I thought no one knew where I was, but my loud breathing gave me away.
We know that Billy ate the cherry pie. The cherry juice on his shirt gave him away.
From Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary:
She thinks no one knows how much she likes him, but her face when I said he’d be there really gave her away!
From Cambridge Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs:
His voice seems quite calm but his trembling hands give him away.
You give yourself away by trying too hard to seem cheerful. [often reflexive]

How about you? What “gave you away” recently? Please tell us about it below.

ATENÇÃO: Use esta expressão exatamente da forma que você a aprendeu. Não acrescente nada a ela, nem use-a como uma tradução direta da palavra “entregar”. Simplesmente diga alguma coisa que você (ou outra pessoa) estava tentando esconder e termine com “but _(something)_ gave me/him/her away”.
