Hi, this is Tim Barrett from www.domineingles.com.br . I saw this crazy _________ the other day. This man, who’s a professional prankster, had _____________ a series of meetings with other “professional” pranksters. (They were young fellows.) But at every meeting, they _________  on arriving late.

So this day, they arranged to have breakfast; and these guys were _________  again.

And just to teach them a lesson, he got some ______________ , took it to the bathroom, filmed it; he put it in the urinal; and then he filmed himself putting it in the guy’s place. (Of course, he didn’t really leave it there, but he made them believe he did.)

So when they arrived, he asked them why they were late again. And he asked them whose _________  it was. So he made the guy whose fault it was to sit beside him. He said, “Later on I’m going to teach you a lesson.”

And then when they were finally finished ____________ , he played this little video and showed him what he ______________ did with the silverware.

“This is what you get, right here. This is what you get for being late. I have something for you. Just watch the video; it will make perfect _________ . Enjoy! Next time call me if you’re gonna be late.”

If you’re going to be late, LET US KNOW!

It was crazy. Can you imagine something like that? So do you get irritated when people are late and _________ you waiting?

What’s worse than that is when someone stands you up. Have you ever been stood up?

That has already happened to me in the past with prospective students (someone who wants to study English with me). More than once, we _______ a time for an interview; and then I waited and waited, and they never ____________  up. So they stood me up.

The phrasal verb “to stand someone up” means to arrange to _________ someone and then never show up for the interview or the appointment. This phrasal verb is used a lot in romantic relationships, like if a couple arranges to meet somewhere, at the mall, for example, and you can say, “Maria stood me up”, meaning she never ___________ up for your date.

But it can be used for other situations, too. For example, you can say, “Listen, I’ll be there; but don’t stand me up; ok?, meaning “I want you to _________  up, too; don’t leave me there by myself.” Or you can tell a friend who you were waiting for at the mall or at a party, who never showed up, “Hey! You stood me up last night! What ___________ ?”

So let’s practice this phrasal verb on our site. Have you ever stood someone up? Or has someone ever stood you up?

Let me warn you. If you ever _________  up a girl, she might never talk to you again so… I hope you haven’t done that! I’ll see you on our site; ok? Bye bye.

SCRIPT WITH TRANSLATIONS AND EXPLANATIONS

Hi, this is Tim Barrett from www.domineingles.com.br . I saw this crazy prank the other day. This man, who’s a professional prankster, had arranged a series of meetings with other “professional” pranksters. (They were young fellows.) But at every meeting, they kept on arriving late.

  • crazy prank = “pegadinha” louca
  • prankster = “brincalhão” (alguém que prega peças)
  • he had arranged a series of meetings = ele tinha organizado/combinado uma série de reuniões
  • young fellows = jovens rapazes
  • they kept on arriving late = eles constantemente chegavam tarde

So this day, they arranged to have breakfast; and these guys were late again.

  • they arranged to have breakfast = combinaram (se encontrar) para o café da manhã
  • these guys were late again = estes “caras” se atrasaram de novo

And just to teach them a lesson, he got some silverware, took it to the bathroom, filmed it; he put it in the urinal; and then he filmed himself putting it in the guy’s place. (Of course, he didn’t really leave it there, but he made them believe he did.)

  • just to teach them a lesson = só para ensiná-los uma lição
  • he got some silverware = ele pegou alguns talheres
  • he put it in the urinal = ele colocou-o(s) no mictório
  • then he filmed himself putting it in the guy’s place = daí ele se filmou colocando-o(s) no lugar do rapaz
  • he didn’t really leave it there = ele não deixou ali de verdade
  • he made them believe he did = ele os fez acreditar que fez

So when they arrived, he asked them why they were late again. And he asked them whose fault it was. So he made the guy whose fault it was to sit beside him. He said, “Later on I’m going to teach you a lesson.”

  • When they arrived = quando eles chegaram
  • He asked them why they were late = ele lhes perguntou por que eles estavam atrasados
  • He asked them whose fault it was = ele lhes perguntou de quem era a culpa
  • He made the guy whose fault it was to sit beside him = ele fez o cara de quem foi a culpa sentar do seu lado
  • later on = mais tarde
  • I’m going to teach you a lesson = vou ensiná-lo uma lição

And then when they were finally finished eating, he played this little video and showed him what he supposedly did with the silverware.

  • When they were finally finished eating = quando eles finalmente terminaram de comer
  • He played this little video = ele tocou este video curto
  • and showed him what he supposedly did with the silverware = e mostrou-lhe o que ele supostamente fez com os talheres

“This is what you get, right here. This is what you get for being late. I have something for you. Just watch the video; it will make perfect sense. Enjoy! Next time call me if you’re gonna be late.”

  • This is what you get for being late = isto é o que você ganha por se atrasar
  • It will make perfect sense = fará perfeito sentido
  • Next time = da próxima vez
  • Call me = ligue para mim
  • If you’re gonna [going to] be late = se você for se atrasar

If you’re going to be late, LET US KNOW!

  • Let us know = deixe-nos saber

It was crazy. Can you imagine something like that? So do you get irritated when people are late and keep you waiting?

  • do you get irritated? = você se irrita?
  • When people are late = quando pessoas se atrasam
  • keep you waiting = te deixam esperando

What’s worse than that is when someone stands you up. Have you ever been stood up?

  • what’s worse than that = o que é pior do que isso

[blocknote class=”red” title=”O que significa o phrasal verb ‘stand someone up'”] Como dizer “stand somebody up” em português. Como se diz “stand somebody up” em português? Qual é a tradução de “stand someone up”? What does “stand someone up” mean? What is the meaning of “stand someone up”?

  • stand (someone) up = “dar o cano”; “dar um bolo”; “furar”; “deixar no vácuo”

[/blocknote]

That has already happened to me in the past with prospective students (someone who wants to study English with me). More than once, we set a time for an interview; and then I waited and waited, and they never showed up. So they stood me up.

  • prospective students = alunos em perspectiva
  • more than once = mais do que uma vez
  • we set a time for na interview = marcamos um horário para uma entrevista
  • they never showed up = eles nunca apareceram

The phrasal verb “to stand someone up” means to arrange to meet someone and then never show up for the interview or the appointment. This phrasal verb is used a lot in romantic relationships, like if a couple arranges to meet somewhere, at the mall, for example, and you can say, “Maria stood me up”, meaning she never showed up for your date.

  • means = significa
  • to arrange to meet someone = combinar de encontrar alguém
  • and then never show up = e depois nunca aparecer
  • romantic relationships = relacionamentos afetivos
  • like if a couple arranges to meet somewhere = como, por exemplo, se um casal combina de se encontrar em algum lugar
  • at the mall = no shopping
  • she never showed up for the date = ela nunca apareceu para o encontro

But it can be used for other situations, too. For example, you can say, “Listen, I’ll be there; but don’t stand me up; ok?, meaning “I want you to show up, too; don’t leave me there by myself.” Or you can tell a friend who you were waiting for at the mall or at a party, who never showed up, “Hey! You stood me up last night! What happened?”

  • it can be used for other situations = pode ser usado para outras situações
  • I’ll be there = estarei lá
  • but don’t stand me up = mas não me dê o bolo; não fure comigo
  • don’t leave me there by myself = não me deixe lá sozinho
  • you can tell a friend = você pode dizer para um amigo
  • who you were waiting for = por quem você estava esperando
  • who never showed up = que nunca apareceu
  • what happened? = o que aconteceu?

So let’s practice this phrasal verb on our site. Have you ever stood someone up? Or has someone ever stood you up?

  • Have you ever stood someone up? = Você já deu o bolo em alguém?
  • Has someone ever stood you up? = Alguém já deu o bolo em você?

Let me warn you. If you ever stand up a girl, she might never talk to you again so… I hope you haven’t done that! I’ll see you on our site; ok? Bye bye.

  • Let me warn you = deixe-me avisá-lo
  • If you ever stand up a girl = se você alguma vez der o bolo em alguma moça
  • She might never talk to you again = ela pode nunca mais falar com você
