Last week I told you I chewed my students out. (See tip ‘Como dizer “dar uma bronca” em inglês’) Today I am going to tell you WHY I chewed them out.

Na semana passada eu lhe disse que deu uma bronca nos meus alunos. Hoje vou dizer POR QUE dei uma bronca neles.

Two of my students, who speak English quite well, were doing a listening exercise in class.

  • who speak English quite well = que falam inglês muito bem

In the audio, a young man (with an Australian accent) was saying what he found most challenging about being a camp counselor during the summer.

  • a young man = um jovem (homem)
  • Australian accent = sotaque australiano
  • was saying = estava dizendo
  • what he found most challenging about being… = o que ele achou mais difícil de ser…
  • conselheiro/monitor de acampamento

This is what he said:

SCRIPT: As a camp counselor, it's difficult to find a way to get through to kids with problems and win their trust. Sometimes kids are very suspicious, and find it hard to trust an adult, even a young adult. So, getting them to open up is the hardest part. Once you've done that, they almost become different people.

After listening to the audio, my students asked, “What does ‘get through to kids’ mean?”

  • after listening to the audio = depois de escutar o áudio
  • what does ___ mean? = o que significa _____ ?

And that’s why I gave them a chewing out! I’ve taught this phrasal verb here at www.domineingles.com.br more than once!

  • That’s why I gave them a chewing out = por isso dei uma bronca neles
  • I’ve taught = ensinei
  • more than once = mais do que uma vez

See:

Um show de outra época e um phrasal verb
Não dá pra falar com ele! Ele nunca vai entender!

[note class=”info”]NOTA: Existe um outro significado para este phrasal verb que ensinei aqui.

Shame on them for not knowing this phrasal verb already!

  • shame on them for not knowing this phrasal verb already! = que vergonha que eles já não conheciam este phrasal verb!

So how about you? Did you remember this phrasal verb? Please tell me about it below. (I hope I don’t have to give you a chewing out, too!)
