Hello.  This is Tim from domineingles.com.br .  I just wanted to tell you about a conversation I had with our friend Ulisses from www.teclasap.com.br .  I saw in his Facebook page that  he had just completed a _____ and I congratulated him and I said, “Are you training for the Rio 2016 Olympics? “  And, as Ulisses has a great mastery of the English language (and phrasal verbs!), he answered, “They turned me down for London… Why not? ;-)”  And then I answered back, “You’ve got four years ahead of you to prepare!”

So what does the Phrasal Verb “turn me down” mean? To turn down somebody” is to reject someone, or to refuse an ________ , for example.  You can be “turned down for a job that you ________ for.  Or you can be turned down for a sport that you _______ out (for).  For example, This is very common to use “turn down” like Ulisses did.  If you said, “I tried out for the soccer team at school, but I was turned down”; that means that they refused you as part of … rejected you as part of the team.

Or you can turn down, like I said, an offer.  Someone ________ you a job, but you turn it down; because you don’t want that job for some reason. Or you can turn down a marriage __________ .  Maybe someone proposed to you – asked you to marry them – but you turned him down. Here’s an example of the phrasal verb “turn down” in a recent Sherlock Holmes series.

Sherlock: Too late to go on the record? Congratulations, "The Truth About Sherlock Holmes." The _______ that everybody wanted and you got it. Bravo!
Reporter: I gave you your opportunity. I wanted to be on your side, remember? You turned me down, so...
Sherlock: Then lo and behold, someone spills all the _______ . How utterly convenient. Who is Brook?

So I hope you haven’t been turned down many times in life; but tell me about it on our site.  When have you been turned down or when did you turn down an offer?  I’ll see you there; ok?  Bye bye!
